ATP French Open 2016: The Most Open It’s Ever Been?

Presently, the French Open is underway at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris. The world’s premier clay court championship event is thought to be wide open this year after firm men’s singles favourite and former nine-time champion Rafael Nadal lost the title to Stanislas Wawrinka in the the 2015 French Open, and with other players such as Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray currently ranking well above his fifth place slot, it seems like all is still to play for in the bid for this year’s title. With such an exciting few weeks ahead in the tennis world, this month the team here at Charles Lawrence are dedicating this month’s article to taking a closer look at the men’s singles tournament and players. Nadal’s comeback? Nadal had an undeniably bad year in 2015, being the first year since 2004 that Nadal did not take home at least one Grand Slam title, and took a further downward turn after a gruelling defeat by Fernando Verdasco in the 2016 edition of the Australian Open. While Nadal’s game is looking improved lately, winning the Monte Carlo Masters just last month, his lack of recent experience in the second week of the French Open could be a huge hindrance. Federer’s withdrawal After suffering a back injury during training in Milan, Federer made the decision to step down from this year’s competition to avoid exacerbating the problem and inflicting a serious injury upon himself. His withdrawal from the competition will be effective as of Thursday 26th May, which will bump Rafael Nadal’s ranking up to fourth place, preventing him from facing off against both Djokovic and Murray until the semi-finals. Djokovic’s year? Djokovic came close to winning the French Open last year before being thwarted by Stan Wawrinka in the final. Since that defeat, Djokovic has been on top form, winning three majors since. The French Open remains the one major that Djokovic has yet to conquer, but this just could be his year. The current rankings As of 23 May 2016 the current ATP singles 5 highest ranking players were:
  1. Novak Djokovic
  2. Andy Murray
  3. Roger Federer
  4. Stanislas Wawrinka
  5. Rafael Nadal
